The setting was crude, if not intimidating. The gym, which was in the basement of an old rec center in Detroit, was sweltering. Yet the name became synonymous with grit and greatness and what happened within its walls is nothing short of legendary. It was a welterweight factory in the boxing world, featuring the savage Thomas “Hitman” Hearns. It made men of wayward boys, and champions out of hungry fighters. Nobody outworked the fighters who showed up to that rundown gym at McGraw Avenue.
