The year was 1960.

The name? Cassius Clay. At just 18 years old Clay introduced himself to the world in Rome by bringing home gold for America. He won all four bouts in the ring easily, including a triumph over three-time European champ Zbigniew Pietzykowski. Why did they call Cassius the “Louisville Lip?” Because he made sure to let everyone know afterward.

“To make America the greatest is my goal, so I beat the Russian and I beat the Pole. And for the USA won the medal of gold. The Greeks said you’re better than the Cassius of old.”

He was. He stood atop the podium. Alone. And we are celebrating the man who later became known as Muhammad Ali with this throwback 1960 tee!
